How To Make French Toast

Some people call it 'French toast', others call it 'Eggy bread' but all agree that its one of the most delicious breakfasts you can enjoy, if done right.

I remember as a kid staying with my dad for the weekends. The smell and taste of that yummy stuff we simply called 'eggy bread' on Saturday mornings. I always used to think it was a strange concept, mixing egg with bread then cooking it and eating it sweet. Nevertheless, this never stopped me from enjoying piece after piece of my favorite ever 'breakfast at dad's.

Did you know that 'French toast' isn't really french in origin. It dates back to the 4th Century and was eaten by the Romans

Known simply as 'Aliter Dulcia' (Another sweet dish) in Latin, there are recipes in Latin dating back to Roman times. There was a German version known as 'Arme Ritter' (Poor knights) and it is also referred to as 'Poor knights' in Norway, Finland and Sweden. The 15th Century British version is called 'Pain Perdu' (French for lost or wasted bread). In those days bread went stale quickly and this was a great way to eat slightly hard bread.

'Hong Kong style French toast' is number 38 on the World's 50 most delicious foods compiled in 2011. It is probably the most tasty version of French toast you can eat.

The thing that makes it unique is that it is deep fried. As long as you aren't watching the calories it is simply delicious. Stacked bread is soaked in beaten egg then deep fried in hot oil. It is served with lashings of butter and golden syrup or honey, often with a sweet filling between the slices, simply heaven! Here is a great recipe from the Huffington Post for Hong kong style French toast.
